“If penicillin can cure those that are ill, Spanish sherry can bring the dead back to life”. Franklin, Benjamin
Javier is the Director of Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana a family owned sherry-maker founded in 1792 and based in Sanlucar de Barameda. He has spent many years tirelessly promoting their range to more than 30 overseas markets. Hidalgo make some glorious sherries aged in the dark, quiet surroundings of the well-ventilated bodega like the Amontillado Viejo, Oloroso Viejo, Palo Cortado Viejo, but the mainstay of the range is La Gitana, a crisp, savoury, bone dry manzanilla. Javier is an expert in his field and his sherry tasting events are a great opportunity to learn more about this aspect of oenology. Apart from his passion for sherry Javier is also a keen amateur jockey and takes part every year in the August horse races on the beaches of Sanlucar de Barameda. By prior appointment only, Javier will give private tours at La Gitana.
