This Zarzuela, performed in the Maestranza Theatre Seville, has not been seen in Spain for more than half a century. It was considered avant garde when it was first performed, distancing itself from the rigid moral code of the time. It takes place in two acts in the Seville barrio of Triana.

This work was originally created at the request of Cardinal Richelieu, as entertainment for the wedding celebrations of the Dauphin Luis, son of Luis XV and the Infanta Maria Teresa of Spain (the Princess of Navarra)
Seville´s Holy Week (Semana Santa) is a passionate recreation of the drama of the last week of Jesus life on earth. The streets of Seville are filled with hooded penitents, exquisitely carved images of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, flowers, candles and the smells of burning incense.
The week features the procession of pasos, floats of lifelike wooden sculputres of individual scenes of the evens of the Passion, or images of the Virgin Mary showing restrained grief for the torture and killing of her Son. Some of the sculptures are of great antiquity and are considered artistic masterpieces, as well as being culturally and spiritually important to the local Catholic population.
